The Probable Irish Ancestry of Gertrude Davenport Dorsey
Generation No. 1
1. Gertrude Davenport Dorsey, born November 18, 1867 in Buffalo, NY; died February 18, 1954 in Salinas, CA1. She was the daughter of 2. James Dorsey and 3. Sarah Jane D'Arcy. She married (1) Henry Warren Hawes. He was born October 29, 1867 in Hampton Falls, NH2, and died November 10, 1938 in Monterey, CA3. He was the son of David Cobb Hawes and Mary Hannah Sanborn.
Notes for Gertrude Davenport Dorsey:
According to family tradition, Gertrude's father James died or separated from her mother when Gertrude was young; she was schooled for a time in a convent, likely Catholic, and possibly in Boston, perhaps in Buffalo. Her daughter Florence talked of Gertrude living on Nob Hill at some time, perhaps with her mother Sarah and step-father William Still*, and they may have lived there during the earthquake, although the Hawes family was living in Monterey or Seaside by the time Florence was born in 1908 and all her siblings were at least partially schooled in Monterey; the family may have also spent some time in Boston.
Gertrude is interred with her husband Henry and her mother Sarah, her daughter Florence, her grand-daughter Adrienne, and her great-grandson James, five generations, at a family plot at the Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove.
Gertrude's grand-daughter Nadine called her "Hawes". Her other grand children remember from their mother Adele that Gertrude was fond of singing Irish songs.
*Henry's brother Levi (Hawes) lived in San Francisco for many years. This may be the Nob Hill connection.

JAMES DARCY
"Mr. Darcy was born in the city of Buffalo, on the 12th of November, 1834, and is a descendant of pure Irish stock. His father, Daniel Darcy, a prominent and influential man is still living in that city, and his mother, whose maiden name was Eliza Devenport, died in 1848, at the age of thirty-two.
"Mr. Darcy was educated in the public schools of his native city, and after removing, in January, 1851, to the city of Brooklyn, where he now resides, served his time as a house-carpenter, which has always since been his chief occupation. He was elected to the Assembly, which is the first public position he ever held, in the fall of 1859, by a majority of upwards of six hundred, over the combined American and Republican parties in his district, and during the last session of the Legislature was a member of the Standing Committee on Internal Affairs of Towns and Counties. He introduced the bill, last winter, establishing a public market in the city of Brooklyn, and also the Brooklyn Ferry Bill, and has again introduced them this session, with the determination, if possible, to secure their success. At the last election he received the unanimous nomination of both the Douglas and Breckenridge branches of the Democratic party, and was again triumphantly elected to the position he now occupies. His legislative career has, thus far, been quiet and unpretending; but he has shown himself an honest, capable, industrious, and intelligent representative. He has, like his father, been a Democrat of the old-fashioned conservative stamp, and has never faltered in his devotion to the real-interests and policy of that party.
"Mr. Darcy is married. He is a young man of more than ordinary promise; has a fine, prepossessing personal appearance; and enjoys a high degree of personal as well as political popularity wherever he is known."
